Sadie and Al
July 1934
In 1880, at the age of nine, Sadie Budd moved
from Atchinson, Kansas to Big Piney with her parents, Daniel
and Josephine Budd, and her younger brothers. In 1882, at the
age of sixteen, Al Osterhout left his home in Wanship, UT to work as a
cowboy for Swan Livestock in Big Piney. Al and Sadie married in 1894.
Their two children, Chester and Josephine (Jodie), were born before the
turn of the century.
In 1903 the Osterhouts homesteaded the original
acres of what is now the Guio Ranch. Later that year they suffered
the loss of young Chester when he was fatally injured in a horseback riding
accident. Jodie met her husband to be, Harrison Guio of San Franscisco,
when he was working as an attorney for Tidewater Associated securing oil
leases in Big Piney. Jodie and Harrison made their home in Alhambra,
CA, where their son, Kenneth, was born in 1925. As a young man, Ken
moved to Big Piney to run the ranch with his grandmother.
