Big Piney High School Football
Final: Big Piney Punchers 19 - Rocky Mountain Grizzlies 6
September 1, 2006

The top-ranked Big Piney Punchers football team started their 2006 season on Friday afternoon with a home game versus the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies.

The Punchers took an early 7-0 lead on an 86-yard openning kickoff return by Seth Linn, but the rest of the game was a tough defensive battle marked by a few big plays. In the second quarter, Parker Greenwood broke a long run around the left end for a touchdown taking the score to 13-0. With 16 seconds left in the half, the Punchers called a time out to stop the clock and force the Grizzlies to punt the ball from their own 30-yard line. The Punchers were able to block the punt, and Seth Linn fell on the ball in the end zone taking the score to 19-0 at half time.

In the second half, neither team was able to move the ball effectively. The Grizzlies did find some success with dump passes over the middle. With 5 minutes to go in the game, the Grizzlies completed a 35-yard pass on 4th and 20 for their only score. Their momentum was stopped on their next series when Chris Manning intercepted a deflected pass. The final score was Punchers 19, Grizzlies 6.

The Punchers travel to Cokeville next Friday 2pm and to Pinedale the following week.

Coach Joel Eskelsen Comments:
(Added 9/4/06)

Certainly was a great start to the game and the season with a TD return on the first kick-off.

It was a good win to start the year. It will be interesting to see how Rocky Mt. does during the year. They may be better than we think which would mean we played a good game against a good team.

The defense played well all day against a huge Rocky Mt. front. The Punchers limited the Grizzles to an 11 yd rushing total. That same group of linemen held Big Piney’s offense in check for most of the game as well. Trevor Wilson and Seth Linn led the defense with double figure tackles. Linn also blocked a punt and recovered it for a TD late in the first half. Chris Manning’s interception was the only turn-over forced by the Puncher defense.

Offensively, Parker Greenwood led the rushing with 50 yds. Linn had 42 yds but added another 127 in returns. Prior to his injury, Brett Moffat had 21 yds. Jr. QB Gary Phillips gave a good effort as Moffat’s replacement. He hit on 2 of his 7 passes for 28 yds.

The Punchers will need to eliminate the penalties that seem to come at the most inopportune times. Hopefully, both Moffat and injured lineman Greg Eiden will be back within the week to strengthen the Punchers.

Parker Greenwood (21) gained 6 yards on the Punchers' first drive of the second half after a long punt return by Seth Linn (30).

Drew Guenthner (20) gained 2 yards on this run, but did a good job of holding on to the ball that the Grizzly defender is trying to strip.

Gary Phillips (11) checks where the defense is lined up on a 4th and 4 play. But an incomplete pass in the end zone stopped the Punchers just 8 yards from another score.

After a 60-yard Grizzly pass play, the Punchers were able to hold the Grizzlies and take the ball again on their own 25-yard line. An incomplete pass on this 3rd down forced the Punchers to punt.

The Grizzlies were again forced to punt. Coach Eskelsen sends Max (32) in with the first down play just before the end of the third quarter.

Brady Parks (53) tackles a Grizzly runner with help from Parker Greenwood (21). The Puncher run defense remained dominate in the second half.

Chris Manning (63) puts pressure on the Grizzly quarterback. By the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies abandoned their running game and went almost exclusively to the pass.

On their third drive of the fourth quarter, the Grizzlies did find some success with the short dump passes over the middle. This one was their second first down of the drive after getting the ball at mid-field.

On fourth down and 20 yards to go from the 35-yard line, the Grizzlies completed a touchdown pass, splitting Puncher defenders Gary Phillips (11) and Drew Guenthner (20), making the score 19-6.

Seth Linn (30) returned the following kick off 30 yards, but was called back again for a holding penalty, leaving the Punchers bad field position again.

After stopping the Punchers, the Grizzlies continued their short dump passing game, but Chris Manning (63) changed the momentum by intercepting this pass with only 3:25 left in the game.

Gary Phillips (11) hands the ball to Drew Guenthner (20). The Punchers kept the ball on the ground to keep time running off the clock.

Second string quarterback Gary Phillips (11) hurt his ankle late in the fourth quarter. Starting quarterback Brett Moffat (15) was knocked out of the game in the second quarter with a shoulder injury.

The Grizzlies got the ball back one last time. Despite completing this 15-yard pass to Whiting (20), they were not able to drive for a score.

The #1 ranked Punchers are off to a good start on their quest for a State Championship in 2006.
